Two Awards for Northwest Light Rail Extension Project by Sundt/Stacy and Witbeck Joint Venture

 |  Press Release

TEMPE (March 27, 2017) – The Northwest Light Rail Extension was honored with two 2017 Alliant Build America Awards during the Associated General Contractors of America Annual Convention.

The awards honor AGC members who build the nation’s most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, utility infrastructure and federal and heavy divisions. The Northwest Extension was honored in the New Highway and Transportation category and in the Marvin M. Black Partnering Excellence category.

Sundt/Stacy and Witbeck, a joint venture of Sundt Construction, Inc and Stacy and Witbeck, completed the 3.2-mile extension to the Valley Metro light rail system in March 2016.

“Winning both the Alliant Build America Award and the Marvin M. Black Partnering Excellence Award was a huge accomplishment for SWSJV, Valley Metro, City of Phoenix and the 19th Ave Community,” said Sundt Senior Project Engineer Chris Elison. “These awards, which are selected by a group of our peers, represent the best projects construction has to offer. It’s an honor to be recognized by other great contractors for the work we performed on the Northwest Extension.”

The project was delivered three months ahead of schedule and within budget despite the challenges of being located in an urban area with a high volume of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Sundt/Stacy and Witbeck also coordinated more than 20 months of utility construction to remove and replace 100 percent of the water, sewer and storm systems.

To keep the community informed, the Sundt/Stacy and Witbeck team developed a smartphone app to provide project updates and information about changing traffic control. The app also contained coupons, business promotions, route information and information about community groups.
