Sundt is committed to hiring a diverse workforce and we are continually looking for chances to employ the industry’s best people and introduce others to exciting opportunities in construction. We are proud to feature a series in our blog that provides insights into accomplishments made by our company’s veterans, women and minorities while highlighting successful careers and opportunities. We’re proud of our diverse culture and thankful for each employee-owner’s contributions. Please follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as we celebrate the things that make Sundt an employer of choice where people thrive in a culture of diversity.
Employee-owner Lisette Guevera recently was named to the newly created role of accounting manager. Our payroll supervisor of four years, Lisette has more than 10 years of industry experience, including five as controller for a contractor specializing in masonry. In her new position, she is responsible for overseeing the general accounting area, which includes payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, job costs and fixed assets. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Arizona and plans to someday earn her CPA.
In Lisette’s limited spare time – she has a 4-year-old daughter, after all – she likes working out and running Spartan races. She helps teach at her church on Sundays and performs volunteer work with Shyann Kindness. Lisette was the assistant coach for her daughter’s soccer team this past season, an experience she described as “incredible.”
How has your experience been working with Sundt?
It’s been wonderful. I have learned so much from our employee-owners and everyone is helpful and very knowledgeable about our industry. Before coming to Sundt, I worked at a construction materials supplier and a subcontractor so I feel lucky since I have been able to see other parts within the construction process. My work experiences have helped me better understand my role here at Sundt.
Construction work goes far beyond the jobsite. How pivotal is the support role played by our accounting department?
There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes that keeps jobsites running and the accounting department’s role is quite important. We assist the jobsites as much as possible with any necessary information.
Have you found that women have good opportunities to move up in the company?
I think Sundt makes an effort to invest in anyone who wants to advance, whether you are a man or woman. I think a woman at Sundt has great opportunity for success. In recent years I’ve seen more and more women within the company enter leadership roles, which makes me continue to want to do better.
What would you say to a woman who wanted to start or continue her career by becoming a Sundt employee-owner?
I would say a simple phrase used by Cesar Chavez: Sí, se puede (Yes, you can).
