Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Breaks Ground for Medical Sciences Building

 |  Press Release

EL PASO (May 15, 2017) – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso broke ground this month on Medical Sciences Building II, a facility that will double the campus’ research capacity and add crucial instructional space to support a growing student population.

Sundt Construction will serve as the Construction Manager at Risk for the $83 million, 219,900-square-foot project.

The building will have more than 87,000 square feet dedicated to research, including laboratories, offices and research administration. The first floor will house the campus’ largest teaching auditorium – 9,200 square feet for up to 500 people. There will also be a dining and food services area, library, reflection room for quiet space, classrooms, study rooms and administration space.

“This building is integral to our vision for TTUHSC El Paso,” said Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso President Richard Lange, M.D., M.B.A. “This will enable us to recruit more researchers to tackle our region’s medical challenges, increase student enrollment in our programs, and ultimately, retain some of the nation’s most well-prepared, culturally competent healthcare professionals right here in the borderland.”

“We are excited to have the opportunity to build this amazing new research facility in our community,” Sundt Project Director Joseph Riccillo said. “Our entire region will be able to benefit from the learning that will happen in this space.”

Like other campus facilities, the exterior will mirror the architecture of the Spanish Renaissance, distinguished by ornate columns, red-tiled roofs and colossal archways. The building was designed by Houston-based architectural firm Perkins + Will.

Construction will be complete in approximately two years.
