San Antonio, Texas (March 26, 2024) – Sundt Construction was selected as the winner of a 2024 Construction Risk Partners Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Build America Award for San Pedro Culture Park Phase 1.2/1.3 in the Environmental Enhancement category.
“We’re honored to be recognized with this award, and proud of our employee-owners’ diligent efforts to bring San Pedro Creek back to life,” said Sundt Transportation Group President Jeff Williamson. “The project not only had environmental impacts by restoring the ecosystem that once lived in the creek but has acted as a catalyst for economic development in downtown San Antonio.”
A continuation of previous phases, phase 1.2/1.3 of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park included reconstructing a half-mile of the active creek for flood control while turning it into a world-class urban linear park. This flood control project removed land and structures from the 100-year-old floodplain by widening and lowering the creek while adding a crest gate to dam the water along the creek, creating an ecosystem for the wildlife that once thrived in the area.
Additionally, the project improved water quality and paid tribute to the birthplace of Bexar County. Work included five vehicular bridges, six pedestrian bridges, a performance plaza, flood control crest gate and structures, Low Impact Development (LID) water quality features, extensive utility relocations, retaining walls, hardscaping, landscaping, artwork and pedestrian improvements. Water features included a 240-linear-foot water wall combined with programmable LED lights used as an art feature by artist Adam Franks.
The AGC Build America Awards represent the industry’s highest honor and recognize the most impressive construction projects across the country. The winners are projects that excel in project management, innovation, safety, client service, community relations, environmental sensitivity and partnering. Sundt has a 50-year tradition of being recognized for its work with this top industry honor, beginning with its first Build America award in 1974.
