SALT LAKE CITY (September 18, 2020) – Engineering News-Record (ENR) Mountain States selected Sundt Construction’s I-215 and Redwood Road Interchange project as its best project in the Highway/Bridges category. ENR is the construction industry’s principal trade publication.
“Our team continues to be honored by the acknowledgment we received on this project,” said Sundt Project Manager Thiago Bezerra. “Each person involved worked hard to deliver a safe and reliable roadway and interchange for North Salt Lake. The team at Horrocks Engineers was a key contributor to the project’s success.”
The design-bid-build project had four distinct components. Over a year and a half, the Sundt team resurfaced Redwood Road from 500 South in Bountiful to Center Street in North Salt Lake and Recreation Way to the County line. The team additionally reconstructed and widened four miles of the I-215 from 2100 N to I-15. The reconstruction of I-215 required the placement of over 25,000 cubic yards of concrete.
The project had four major components: first, the resurfacing of Redwood Road from 500 S to Center Street and Recreation Way to County line; second, the I-215 roadway; third, the full widening and reconstruction of Redwood Road; and fourth and finally, the new bridge and Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). The DDI temporarily routes vehicles to the left side of the road, allowing for higher volumes of traffic to cross, enter, or exit the freeway. Drivers have less wait time and fewer chances for collisions. Building this brand-new interchange alongside live traffic required detailed phasing work, literally down to the inch.
For more than two decades, Sundt has expanded and improved infrastructure in the Beehive State. In December of 2019, Sundt broke ground on the new Water Reclamation Facility for Salt Lake City’s Department of Public Utilities located in northern Salt Lake City. The $528 million facility will serve more than 200,000 customers over a 110-square-mile service area.
