The skyline in downtown Tucson has been transformed with the addition of the new Pima County Downtown Courts Complex, a seven-story structure being built by Sundt for Pima County. The building’s glass-and-metal exterior sparkles as the light reflects off of it at different angles throughout the day.
Although the core and shell are nearly complete, Sundt’s crews aren’t packing up quite yet. That’s because they were recently notified that the county selected Sundt for the project’s next phase: completion of the building’s 290,000-square-foot interior as well as the construction of an adjacent parking garage for more than 700 vehicles and a single-story retail building. The interiors package adds another $22.4 million to Sundt’s original $48.2 million contract. The garage is in the design development phase.
The criminal justice construction project fills in a four-acre parcel of prime downtown real estate (formerly a parking lot) while providing a centralized facility that includes 15 courtrooms, judges’ chambers, a sally port, detention cells, meeting rooms, administrative offices, and space for a handful of other county departments.
