ABILENE, Texas (April 10, 2015) – The Texas Department of Transportation recently selected Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) to reconstruct the U.S. Route 84 bridge over Old Highway 80 and the Union Pacific Railroad in Abilene, Texas.
The $9 million fast-track project includes replacement of the original bridge, which was built in 1953, with a new, five-span, 530-foot-long prestressed concrete girder bridge. The 1.5-mile-long transportation construction project also includes reconstruction of the asphalt approaches on each side of the bridge.
“The efficiency and expertise of our construction crew members, as well as our team’s ability to innovate and adapt to unforeseen circumstances, gave us the confidence to remain so competitive during the bidding process,” said Sundt Regional Director Fred Stone. “Once completed, this bridge will be a vital part of Abilene’s business loop and serve an important stretch of roadway as the city looks to grow its economy in the years to come.”
The project was bid as an A + B project, meaning the low bidder is selected on a monetary combination of the contract bid items and the time needed to complete the critical portion of the project. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2015. Sundt is recognized as a national transportation construction expert and has completed many notable heavy civil projects, including the West Seventh Street Bridge project in Fort Worth, Loop 375 Transmountain West widening project in El Paso, and State Route 202 Red Mountain widening project in Phoenix, Arizona.
