Preconstruction Manager Bruce Bacon has spent 37 years in the industry, playing a key role on several multi-million-dollar projects, totaling over $15 billion within the last 10 years. He most recently has supported Sundt’s Transportation Group with their current San Pedro Creek project in San Antonio and upcoming 183 North Mobility project in Austin. After seeing his resume, it might seem odd to spot Bruce at random houses around town trimming hedges, mowing lawns, or repairing old fences on the weekend. But for people who personally know Bruce and his involvement with the Sundt Foundation, it’s a pretty normal occurrence.
Bruce and fellow Sundt volunteers and their family members recently performed home repair work with Mid-Cities Care Corps (MCCC), a nonprofit helping to preserve the independence and well-being of seniors in Northeast Tarrant County. The team spent two consecutive Saturdays working on an elderly woman’s home. They removed dead trees and old fence panels, set new posts, built one new gate and repaired another, and added 24 feet of new fence.
The community has a great need for this kind of volunteer work, explained Bruce. “A lot of these residents have lived in their home for 40, 50, 60-plus years. They’re getting on in years, and for several reasons—sometimes the husband passes away—it gets very difficult to take care of the home.” When a property starts to fall into disrepair, cities have no choice but to follow their code and issue warnings, then citations. “MCCC is one of the organizations that gets a phone call when this happens, and they reach out to volunteer teams like ours to come and spruce up the property,” he said.
Bruce has had the privilege of serving with MCCC for several years, and for him it’s not just about helping homeowners keep up to code. “There’s also the relationships you build with these folks; you learn a lot about their lives,” he said. “Since 2016, my wife and I have mowed the lawn of a lovely woman in Bedford, who lives just three miles from us. Before her husband passed, we got to know him as well and became friends. He served as a WWII veteran. Lawn care is the least we could do for his family, considering the sacrifices he made for our country.”
“I’ve been fortunate in my career to work for builders who value giving back. It’s something my father modeled for me, and something I’ve tried to model for my sons as well. And whether it’s through grant checks, or putting in some sweat equity like we did here with MCCC, it’s a big part of Sundt’s culture. We’re here to do right by our community.”
