Sundt’s El Paso projects have received national recognition from Engineering News-Record (ENR) and The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) for three years running. These awards speak to the city’s talented workforce and the quality construction they perform. This success would not have been possible without the dedication of Sundt employee-owners; they’ve built trusting partnerships with major clients over the last decade. Sundt’s award-winning projects fill diverse needs in the community, but the goal remains the same: to improve the quality of life for El Pasoans.
“The Beast” Urban Park
2021 ENR Texas & Louisiana Best Project Award of Merit, Sports/ Entertainment
Completed in 2020, The Beast Urban Park on El Paso’s east side is a hub for families to gather and engage in recreational activities. El Paso Project Director Joseph Riccillo explained, “the goal was to provide the east side with a community center that was inclusive of everyone’s needs, no matter their age.”
Phase I of the park included a three-part facility: a state-of-the-art natatorium with a 50-meter pool, a community center with classrooms and gymnasium, and a waterpark with El Paso’s first wave simulator. According to Joseph, this area of El Paso is expanding rapidly; necessary facilities like The Beast allow the community to come together in collaboration and celebration.
ENR reports on the top construction companies and projects in the United States, providing construction and industry professionals with the latest news and data. “Earning ENR’s recognition is even more validation that we’re serving the community in the right way. Our ability to create an integrated team with the City of El Paso, designers and subcontractors was a major contributing factor in the success of this project.”
HACEP Blue Flame Housing Renovation Project
2020 ENR Texas and Louisiana Excellence in Safety, Award of Merit
From 2018 to 2021, Sundt performed six separate housing renovation and expansion projects in El Paso through public-private partnerships involving federal funding and private equity investment.
“One of my proudest moments with Sundt is being a small part of a tangible solution to affordable housing in El Paso.”- Joseph Riccillo, El Paso Project Director, Building Group
The project team was committed to Sundt’s safety program every step of the way. Subcontractors were actively engaged in learning Sundt‘s safety protocols, and many integrated the company’s practices into their own policies.
Joe is proud that the team’s dedication to safety was celebrated by ENR. “As a whole, this award speaks to the workforce in El Paso and their commitment to quality, safety, and efficiency, especially on projects as necessary as affordable housing.”
Go 10
2021 AGC Construction Risk Partners Build America Award Highway & Transportation New category
2020 ENR Texas and Louisiana Best Project, Highway/Bridge
Completed in 2019, GO 10 was a complete transformation of Interstate 10 (I-10) on El Paso’s west side. The four-year reconstruction spanned 5.75 miles and included major components such as new collector-distributor lanes, the addition of lanes to I-10 in both directions, 29 bridges and the reconfiguration of ramps and overpasses at three exits.
“GO-10 was the most logistically complicated and largest hard-bid project Sundt has ever performed. The awards also speak to TxDOT and their willingness to collaborate with Sundt on challenging and necessary infrastructure improvements in El Paso.” – Mark Soyster, Area Manager, Sundt Transportation Group
Mark Soyster acknowledged the work Sundt employee-owners have done to build a collaborative partnership with TxDOT. This relationship resulted in the success of GO 10 and subsequent transportation projects.
Bringing a Build America Award to El Paso was a special moment for the project team as the award honors AGC members who build the nation’s most impressive projects. “It’s important to acknowledge the weight of a Build America Award for the City of El Paso. Our city is able to claim that we have one of the best highway/bridge systems in the nation,” said Joseph. “The hope is that this kind of recognition brings more funding for necessary infrastructure improvements in El Paso.”
