EL PASO, Texas (December 22, 2021) – Sundt Construction, Inc., recently was awarded a construction manager at risk contract for the $49 million Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace Center at The University of Texas at El Paso.
“We are thrilled to be able to build this integral facility for the research and innovation happening at UTEP,” said Joseph Riccillo, Sundt’s El Paso regional leader and UTEP alumnus. “This facility will build upon the University’s experience in the field and provide an educated talent pool that will transform the manufacturing and aerospace industries.”
The approximately 88,000-square-foot, four-level building brings together research groups currently spread across campus and creates new and expanded research and educational opportunities for UTEP’s undergraduates and graduate students. In May, the University announced its new undergraduate degree in aerospace and aeronautical engineering.
UTEP is a national leader in additive manufacturing. Its new, state-of-the-art facility will house the university’s growing research and teaching program and expand its national and international reputation in this field. The university has performed advanced research in this field during the past decade sponsored by NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Economic Development Agency, industry partners and others.
“Sundt has always been at the forefront of building transformative infrastructure,” Riccillo added. “This is just another piece to show El Paso‘s innovative forethought and strength in the region.”
The new center will substantially increase the number of students in advanced manufacturing and aerospace research with plans to train over 600 students annually. It is estimated the aerospace and manufacturing industries will need more than 10,000 engineers in the coming years to maintain the current workforce.
