Sundt recently donated $5,000 to help fund the creation of the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument on the grounds of the state’s capitol in Austin. The bronze sculpture will serve as an everlasting reminder of the 105 Texas men who answered the nation’s call to serve and remain Missing in Action in Vietnam. It also honors the 17 native Texans who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as every Texan who fought and served the United States with courage during the Vietnam War.
The monument will be dedicated at a ceremony on March 29. The monument committee selected New Mexico artist Duke Sundt to create the bronze sculpture. He is a relative of the Sundt Construction’s founder, M.M. Sundt.
“The Texas Vietnam Veterans Monument is long overdue as recognition and a ‘welcome home’ to Texans who served in the American Armed Forces in Vietnam. It is a permanent memorial to the 3,417 Texans who died or are unaccounted for in the Vietnam War,” Monument Committee Chairman Robert Floyd said.
Sundt Senior Vice President and Texas District Manager John Carlson echoed Floyd’s thoughts.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument. The men and women who served our country during that time are close to our hearts, as is this monument.”
