The new office in Vancouver, WA will serve Oregon and Washington.
Vancouver, Wash. (April 26, 2023) – Sundt Construction, Inc., one of the nation’s largest and most respected general contractors, has furthered its expansion into the Northwest by opening an office in Vancouver, Washington. The move will support the company’s focus on building critical infrastructure throughout the northwestern United States.
“Sundt has a long history of working in the Northwest. With the area’s continued growth and need for critical infrastructure, the time is right to establish a permanent office in the region,” said Jeff Williamson, Transportation Group President at Sundt Construction. “We are looking forward to helping our clients implement sustainable, community-focused solutions to their construction challenges.”
The northwestern United States is home to numerous public and private sector entities looking for contractors to meet their complex construction needs.
“Sundt has built a strong reputation by providing innovative solutions to help clients deliver necessary infrastructure improvements like we are currently doing on the I-5 Rose Quarter and Boeckman Road Corridor Improvement projects,” said Sundt Area Manager Ken Kubacki.
The I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project aims to improve safety and reduce congestion, alleviating the traffic issues that occur on the 1.8-mile stretch of I-5 between the I-84 and I-405. The project will redesign overpasses and reconnect neighborhood streets to enhance public spaces, promote local economic development opportunities, and improve community connections. It will add ramp-to-ramp auxiliary lanes allowing drivers to enter and exit the highway without having to merge in through the lanes. Full shoulders will create space for disabled vehicles to move out of the way of traffic and allow emergency vehicles to pass. Local street improvements include wider paths, accessible curb ramps, better lighting and protected bike lanes. A highway cover over I-5 will reconnect local streets and create new community spaces on top.
The Boeckman Road Corridor Improvement Project is being delivered using progressive design-build procurement method and will provide new opportunities to enhance and protect wildlife habitats. The original construction of the road required 300 feet of corrugated metal culverts to allow the waters of Boeckman Creek to flow under the road. However, this created a barrier that made it more difficult for fish and wildlife to move through their native habitat. Sundt will remove these culverts and replace them with a three-span bridge, raising the profile of the roadway to restore the natural ebb and flow of wildlife in the area. Sundt will also construct new sewer improvements that will enhance the creek’s natural resources, treat stormwater for improved water quality and amp up flood protections.
Sundt’s landmark project in Portland was the reconstruction of the 2,000-foot-long Sellwood bridge over the Willamette River, which was completed in 2016. Sundt and its joint-venture partner used an innovative shoofly (detour) approach to complete the award-winning project. The team lifted the old bridge deck and truss, moved it to one side, placed it on a temporary set of piers, and connected it to temporary approach spans to allow traffic to continue to use the old bridge. The new bridge, an open steel deck arch structure, complements its surroundings and provides ample space for all modes of travel. The shoofly approach shortened the schedule by a year and reduced the project’s cost by more than $5 million.
