It will be a busy summer for Sundt crews working to complete the new Aztec Student Union at San Diego State University. The $72 million Construction Manager at Risk project – on track to be California’s first LEED Platinum-certified student union – will be complete and open to students this fall.
“We are in full swing on the exterior,” says Sundt Project Manager Jamie Frye. “We plan to have the entire building plastered by the end of July. The PVC roofing is about 50 percent complete, and the clay tile roof is loaded on the pitched roofs, ready for install. Site work is also underway.”
Work on the building’s interior is also proceeding smoothly. The team is finishing painting in the bowling alley so they can begin work on the acoustically isolated floor slab below.
The original 43-year-old student center was demolished to make way for its replacement. The new, three-story student union will accommodate 30,000 students across 205,582 square feet of space, making it twice the size of the one that stood before it. It will serve as the university’s hub for meeting, socializing and studying. Additionally, the union will feature dining options, retail space, 14 meeting rooms, a fitness center and the aforementioned bowling alley.
