Community members, university officials and students at San Diego State University have been waiting more than 20 years to see the property along College Avenue developed, and now their hopes are finally being fulfilled.
Sundt Construction is well under way constructing what will become housing, retail and restaurant offerings at the new San Diego State University South Campus Plaza. Sundt is self-performing the structural concrete on the project, which means any challenges can be quickly identified, and those changes can be implemented quickly and efficiently. By self-performing this essential work, Sundt also maintains better control of the schedule.
The $143 million, university construction project includes two residential buildings above ground-floor retail, and an adjacent parking structure. Installation of the overhead plumbing, mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems piping is about 90% complete for Building 1, and the team is now erecting formwork for the Building 2 podium deck. The first half poured in the early morning hours of Friday, June 19th.
“It should be very exciting to see just how fast the building frame gets erected and see how all of the behind-the-scenes work, like having the walls and floor panels for levels 2 through 6 prefabricated, benefits the project schedule,” said Jamie Frye, Project Executive for the South Campus Plaza project. “Once the Building 2 deck pours, Standard Drywall Inc. will start erecting wall panels on this building, and the race between Building 1 and Building 2 is on!”
