Project Overview

The Poston Butte High School was comprised of multiple contiguous phases that resulted in the construction of a state-of-the-art campus for the Florence Unified School District. Sundt was the Construction Manager at Risk during the design and construction phases of this 207,000-square-foot high school campus situated on 56 acres. With funding provided by the School Facilities Board (SFB) the main project included classrooms, a new library, full service kitchen, cafeteria, and gymnasium.  The project also included baseball and softball facilities as well as tennis courts and a track and football stadium.

As a phased project, students and faculty were able to occupy parts of the campus as construction continued. Project highlights included exposed structural and decorative steel elements in the main building, science and laboratory facilities, bowstring trusses, a standing seam metal roof and a 25,000 square foot grade 1 maple competition basketball floor in the gymnasium.

Poston Butte is a textbook-free school. Students are issued a laptop and all school assignments and tests are completed electronically. This additional information technology requirement was managed by Sundt as part of the construction process.

Following the construction of the main school facility Sundt completed an additional practice gym, including a competitive cheer and weight training facility, and a culinary training and education wing. The culinary training center included cameras around the cooking space so students would be able to view everything behind the stove and countertop from mounted television screens. An adjoining banquet room was created for students to gain experience in hospitality and serving.
