The Lewisville City Council contracted with Sundt to construct Windhaven Parkway. The project was comprised of 1,500 feet of four lanes connecting Windhaven Parkway from Cookie Lane to Brown Knight Lane. The project created a continuous thoroughfare for the city and provides motorists a parallel route to SH 121/Sam Rayburn Tollway.
The project also included a 100-foot-long railroad bridge for KCS Railroad, approximately 2,700 feet of temporary shoofly track necessary for construction of the new bridge, permanent track, new roadway underpass, retaining walls (cast-in-place, drilled shaft, MSE), removal of shoofly track, construction of concrete pavement, utilities, gravity and force main drainage lines, a new 200-hp storm water pump station and associated piping, sidewalks and landscaping.
Lowering the roadway under the railroad created a depressed section of roadway. This section meant a pump station, an atypical scope of work for most roadway projects, was needed to remove the storm water from rain events. Sundt installed a drainage system to remove stormwater from the underpass. The system includes gravity drainage comprised of 18-inch, 24-inch, 27-inch, and 30-inch reinforced concrete pipe and associated inlets as well as an 8-foot by 6-foot precast concrete box culvert to bring the storm water to the pump station. The two pumps in the pump station then push the storm water to higher elevation through 16-inch and 30-inch force main drainage pipes to keep the roadway clear during rain events.
Construction of the bridge for KCS Railroad required close coordination with the railroad to provide safe passage of their trains and to keep Sundt’s workers safe. Sundt fostered a partnership with KCS, the designer, and the City of Lewisville to ensure the project was constructed safely and efficiently. The partnering resulted in the project being delivered 15 weeks ahead of schedule.
