Project Overview

Sundt served as the construction manager at risk for the Beacon Recreation Center, a 36,000-square-foot facility that sits on a 12.8-acre site adjacent to Webb Community Park. The project includes a gymnasium, fitness and weights area, aerobics and yoga studio, classrooms and childcare area. The project also includes an outdoor aquatics feature, adventure playground, walking trails and a skate park. Community members from all ages and interests are served by the new rec center, which offers them a purpose-built place to stay active and connect with neighbors, friends and family.

To say the Beacon was highly anticipated by the community of Southeast Arlington would be an understatement. While actual construction took less than two years, public funding for the project began six years prior, and the area had been waiting for a project like this for over 20 years. Residents gave input through a citywide survey, public meetings, and a council-appointed committee. The project team successfully incorporated this feedback into design and construction. They also navigated inclement weather and a pandemic to finish this facility for the community, and did so at a time when health and wellness are crucial.

One example of the team’s ability to go beyond the expected was its early turn-over of the outdoor skate park. While the recreation center was still under construction, the skate park was enticing a few Arlington skateboarders. Once the project team got word that these residents were eager to begin enjoying their new space, they approached the client with an idea to turn over the skatepark early. This decision would serve end-users sooner and also limit project liability. Once approved, the team worked to expedite certain elements such as irrigation lines, landscaping, paving, and exterior lighting to move up the skatepark’s completion.

“It’s very difficult when you’re constructing these facilities to do anything but take the lowest bidder. Yet here on this project, we got one of the premier contractors. Sundt did an incredible job; they were collaborative, they worked so well with our parks department, and they kept everything on schedule.”
