No Room, No Road Closures…No Problem

Sundt’s experience building complex higher education projects in tight spaces came in handy with the construction of the $50 million San Diego Community College Math and Social Science Building, which was completed last fall. The 83,000-square-foot classroom building and adjacent seven-tier parking structure occupy an entire city block in the heart of downtown San Diego.

With almost no space on site for materials and vehicles throughout the 22 months of construction, the team members had their work cut out for them.

“Traffic control was a constant focus,” said Sundt Project Manager Conrad Benitez. “There was no room on the site for anything, so we did most of our concrete pours, pumping, and some other activities from the street. But we weren’t allowed any total road closures, so that took a look of coordination and planning. I got to know the folks down at the city traffic control department really well.”

It helped that most of the $17.7 million concrete construction package was self-performed by Sundt’s own crews, which gave the team greater control over both quality and the schedule.
