We are pleased to announce that Ryan Cannon has joined our Tempe office as a project manager. Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management from Arizona State University, and comes to Sundt with more than a decade of construction experience. He previously served as project manager for an accomplished, family-owned contracting firm in Gilbert. In his initial assignment with Sundt, Ryan joins the team constructing the Biosciences Partnership Building (BPB) in downtown Phoenix. We recently asked him a few questions to get to know him better.
What brought you to Sundt?
I was looking to get more involved with larger and more complex projects and knew that Sundt was a contractor that pursued those types of projects. I also knew about the ESOP, which played a large part in me joining Sundt.
Describe the kind of work you do in your new position.
I coordinate the day-to-day management of the project, oversee the subcontractors and establish, update and communicate the schedule. I also manage the budget and financial reporting, oversee quality assurance and quality control, oversee the job site safety, and keep management informed of project progress and budget.
Which project(s) are you currently working on?
I am working on the Biosciences Partnership Building. It is a 10-story, 245,000-square-foot research facility on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
What’s the most unusual project you ever worked on?
The current project I’m working on is a first for me. I’ve typically worked on highway construction projects, but this smaller jobsite is new to me.
What would you be doing if you weren’t working in the construction industry?
I’ve always enjoyed cooking, so I would probably pursue the culinary arts field.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I really enjoy spending time with my family; I have a daughter and a son who will be here in October. I also enjoy going to the horse tracks in California, along with watching horse racing on TV. Every February, I take a ski trip with my friends, which I look forward to all year.
What’s the best movie you saw recently?
I can’t recall a good movie that I saw recently because I’m not typically watching movies. Right now, I’m watching this television series called “Turn: Washington’s Spies.” It’s about the spy ring during the American Revolution. Season 2 just finished up, so I’m excited for season 3 to start next year.
Do you have a favorite quote or saying that motivates or inspires you?
“It’s better to be fiscally poor yet rich in experience – living the dream – than to be traditionally wealthy but live separate from one’s passion.” – Unknown.
Where would you most like to travel?
Tahiti.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
I had a senior project manager once tell me that when things are going badly on a job, don’t let people see that you’re frustrated or upset. Your temperament needs to stay even at all times, because if it is others will see that you can handle stressful situations and don’t get rattled easily.
