Sundt is pleased to announce that Paul Tenold has joined us as a preconstruction project manager working in our Irvine office. With more than 30 years of construction experience, Paul has spent his entire career in the Los Angeles and Orange County markets. Prior to joining Sundt, he held roles in preconstruction for 14 years, including preconstruction manager, director of preconstruction and chief estimator positions. We recently asked Paul a few questions to get to know him better.
What drew you to Sundt?
The diverse, rich history of the company and specifically the history of M.M. Sundt (the company’s founder). I was intrigued by his story because I am also a descendant of Norwegian immigrants, on both my mother’s and father’s side. My father’s ancestors emigrated from Norway and built their own town, which is now a historical site, in northern Iowa.
What are your responsibilities in your new position?
Preconstruction – development and management of project opportunities on the front side of business acquisition. I work, with many others, on developing the company’s next project opportunities.
What are you currently working on?
Right now I’m assisting with the preconstruction phase of the new Rental Car Center at San Diego International Airport. Additionally, I am working with the preconstruction team to enlarge our subcontractor database for the Los Angeles region.
What might you be doing if you weren’t working in construction?
I entered the construction industry straight out of college, but had gone to college on a football scholarship with the intention of teaching and coaching. If the influences in my life at that time hadn’t driven me toward construction, I would probably be teaching and coaching. I did coach youth sports throughout my son’s and daughter’s youth and enjoyed working with the kids.
What’s the most interesting book you read recently?
I go to the gym regularly, usually five to six times a week, and I read while I am on the treadmill. I usually read health-related books, as they help me focus on the body for that dedicated period of time. Recently I have been reading a book titled Your Body’s Thirst for Water, which goes into great detail about our need for staying well hydrated.
Best thing about living in the LA area?
The weather! My wife and I stay active here by biking, kayaking and experiencing the fine arts, but our hearts are really in the countryside of Wisconsin, where we recently bought a second home.
Where would you most like to travel?
Europe and, more specifically, Norway. We plan on taking a trip to Norway in the next few years.
How do you like to spend your free time?
We bike, kayak, fish and take in the fine arts – music, theatre and art. I love to spend time with my wife; she is my best friend.
Best advice you ever received?
Regarding faith: Stay close to God, live with grace, the love of Christ, and treat others as you would want others to treat you.
