We’re pleased to announce that Nicole Calamaio has joined Sundt as our new corporate director of total rewards. Nicole brings nearly 20 years of experience working in human resources, 15 of which she spent as director of compensation, benefits and human resource information systems for another prominent construction company. She earned a Master of Arts degree in human resources and industrial relations from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts degree in human resource management from the University of St. Thomas. We recently asked Nicole a few questions to get to know her better.
What drew you to Sundt?
Sundt has a very strong reputation in the construction industry and is known as a great place to work. I was also drawn to Sundt’s ESOP structure; I’m excited to be an employee-owner and about the opportunities it provides for me and my family.
What are your job responsibilities in your new position?
I direct the management, planning and administration of all of Sundt’s rewards programs, including compensation, benefits and recognition.
Does the current economic climate present any unique challenges or opportunities with the kind of work you do?
Absolutely! The war for talent is upon us and rewards programs are a key component of attracting and retaining high quality talent. Additionally, we are continually challenged to provide a rewards program to employees that is highly valued, easy to use, cost-effective and competitive; this becomes more difficult – but also more important – in a tight economic climate.
Where might you be working if you weren’t in the construction industry?
I’d be on a tropical island, running my own resort!
What’s the most interesting book you read recently?
I recently reread “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.
Most interesting place you ever lived?
San Francisco; I was living there in 1989 when the 7.0-magnitude earthquake occurred.
Where would you most like to travel?
Anywhere in the South Pacific – Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti …
How do you like to spend your free time?
Spending time with my family, traveling and boating.
Best advice you ever received?
Do what makes you happy.
Is there a person who has had a profound influence on you?
My parents, my husband and my three kids have all had a profound influence on me … and all in different ways!
