Mark Soyster

El Paso Area Manager

Mark Soyster is a native Arizonan and a proud 1983 graduate of Arizona State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in construction management — one of only three programs of its kind in the country at the time.
With a career spanning over 40 years, Mark has been instrumental in shaping Arizona’s infrastructure. Before joining Sundt Construction, he spent 23 years with a prominent Arizona contractor, advancing from estimating and field engineering roles to project manager, operations manager, vice president of operations, and ultimately, senior vice president. During this time, Mark played a key role in constructing significant portions of the Greater Phoenix area’s freeway systems, leaving a lasting impact on the region’s transportation network.

Tell us about your favorite KAPBCS moment.

My favorite KAPBCS moment is being part of a growing team here in west Texas and watching our team of professionals grow in their craft.

Tell us about your favorite Sundt project.

The US 54 IH-10 connect has been my favorite project because of its complexity. Sundt reconstructed an existing El Paso interchange between US 54 and IH-10 in a dense urban area, demoing and reconstructing 16 bridges. We also constructed new traffic lanes right up to the US/Mexico “Bridge of the Americas” (BOTA) border.

If you could have any superpower, what would you choose and why?

It wouldn’t matter to me which superpower as long as it was used for good.

Why did you choose to work in the construction industry?

My father was a civil engineer and spent most of his career working in Saudi Arabia managing a highway program for the Saudi government. In my younger years, we lived in Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and I was fortunate to travel the world. It seemed natural to follow in his footsteps.

Share a couple of your favorite hobbies.

I have a lot of hobbies. In 1983, I learned to fly RC airplanes and competed in aerobatics competitions for years. I have always enjoyed aviation. In my later years, I enjoy shooting, hunting and fly fishing.

What is your favorite place in the world?

I enjoy visiting all new places, but for relaxation, I enjoy eastern Idaho because of the outdoors adventures and hobbies.
