Employee-Owners Celebrate, Remember on Veterans Day

 |  Sundt People

Sundt has consistently demonstrated a commitment to hiring military talent by expanding its active-duty, military spouse and veteran employee roster. In recognition of those efforts, we won the 2016 Military Friendly Employer designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse magazines.

In honor of Veterans Day, we asked a few of our employee-owners who have served what the day means to them.

Veterans Day is introspective to me. I think about the people I served with, those who returned and those who gave their lives in service to their country.

Veterans Day is a time of remembrance for the friends I have lost, both in combat and those lost as a result of their experiences. It is a day for me to reflect on both the good times and the bad that I feel are the reasons for who I am today. Veterans Day is also a time for me to be thankful for those veterans, both past and future, who sacrificed so much for my family and me to experience the freedoms we have today.

Navy, 5 years

Veterans Day is an opportunity to recognize all those who have taken time in their life to serve our country in the military. I let the day be a reminder of the service of all of those who have gone before me to keep this “great American experiment” secure. Specifically, I honor my dad and father-in-law who both served in Vietnam and never received the recognition they deserved.

Terry Morrell, Senior Project Superintendent

Navy, 4 years

Terry MorrellVeterans Day is a special day for me personally for many reasons. Having lost friends while we served in the Navy, it is another day that special thoughts and prayers are resurrected and memorialized in their honor. We served by choice in the later years of the Vietnam War efforts. My service was only four years. If I had to do over again, I would have made a career of it.

On a personal note, my son-in-law, Gunnery Sargent Josh Hunt, USMC, is my true hero and patriot to this country. He has been deployed three times to Afghanistan. In the second deployment, the vehicle he was riding in was blown up by an IUD. Four occupants in the vehicle received major concussions and brain injuries from the explosion. Three occupants were transferred to a German hospital but they kept Josh in country in Afghanistan due to him serving with a Seal Team in a forward-observation position. Josh has received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and five-time Navy Commendation Letters for his service. Josh is a patriot and proud to be in harm’s way for his country.

This country is special and deserving of our finest, but we must appreciate and serve it with passion and respect. Veterans Day is set aside for those who have lost their lives for our Freedoms. In some countries, even an email of this nature would be grounds for arrest and detention.

Every year, Veterans Day reminds me of the sacrifices many young Americans make so others can enjoy freedom. It’s a rewarding feeling to serve your country and I’m very glad I did my part.

It’s a day to thank and honor America’s veterans for their willingness to serve their fellow countrymen. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a happy day of celebration. I always partake in activities. It’s very important and personal to me to get out there and thank other veterans, share experiences and grow from their perspectives. My family has served in every American conflict since the Civil War, when Great-Great-Great Grandpa Casper emigrated from Switzerland to fight for the Union in the American Civil War.
