SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 4, 2024) – The San Pedro Creek Improvements project reached a milestone in late January with the completed replacement of a Union Pacific Railroad bridge crossing over San Pedro Creek.
“This new bridge, a testament to the combined dedication and excellence of our partners, provides a seamless connection between the north and south sections of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park,” said Derek Boese, general manager of the San Antonio River Authority. “As we near the final phase of this transformative project, we look forward to enhancing accessibility in the heart of San Antonio and celebrating the creek’s rich history and culture.”
The final elements of the park, including the natural creek channel improvements, limestone retaining walls, paseo, lighting, and landscaping, are already underway, fully uniting the north and south sections.
“Completing this new bridge crossing marks a significant milestone toward the finish of this amazing project,” said Daniel Green, Sundt senior project manager. “Sundt-Davila, Bexar County, San Antonio River Authority and the design team led by HDR have worked tirelessly through design, permitting and utility relocations for this bridge replacement for over three years. Being able to now connect the trails and natural creek improvements across this section of the creek over the next several months enables us to complete the San Pedro Creek Culture Park for our San Antonio residents, visitors and community.”
Sundt Construction and its trade partner crews replaced the existing 105-foot wooden trestle bridge with a new 195-foot precast concrete bridge and more than 300 feet of new track and ballast, working on a 24-hour a day schedule to meet the 75-hour track outage window provided by Union Pacific. Preparation for the bridge crossing replacement included relocating existing water main and storm utilities and installing 14 new 48-inch by 60-foot deep drilled shafts.
Completion of the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project is anticipated in late spring 2025. The first phase of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park was completed in 2018 and opened to the public during City of San Antonio’s 300th anniversary celebration.
